Macomb Habitat for Humanity Gains Unique VA Approval to Build Status

The local affiliate of the national nonprofit is the only one in the country approved by the Veterans Administration to build and sell homes to veterans.

Macomb County Habitat for Humanity is reaching new heights. The local affiliate of the nonprofit has applied for and has received VA-sanctioned status to build and then sell homes to veterans.

Like all Michigan affiliates, serving veterans has become a top priority for the Macomb County Habitat.

President and CEO, Helen Hicks, said she is thrilled with the possibilities to serve this population.

“We are always looking for new ways to help our Veterans and their families,” she said. “Receiving the VA status as a sanctioned builder is very important to our long-range goals and to our mission.”

In 2013-14, the affiliate focused on assisting Veterans and their families by participating in the Hometown Heroes project, supported by Home Depot and in the Brush With Kindness program supported by the American House Foundation and Thrivent Financial.

This year, according to Hicks, the goal is larger.

“We hope to place several Veteran families in a new home,” she said. “We will work closely with the vets to qualify them for a mortgage and we will be by their side as the home is dedicated and the symbolic ribbon is cut.”

While the approvals are all in place, Macomb County Habitat has only one request at this time for the community to better serve the veterans: The affiliate needs at least $50,000 to complete a few homes and volunteers need the support now.

Macomb County Habitat for Humanity strives to make a sound contribution to our Macomb County communities, to revitalize our cities with safe, decent, affordable housing. Our families work hard at proving that they are worthy homeowner candidates who will thrive in their new homes.  And the community, through your generosity, gives them reason to believe it is possible to have a modest share in the American Dream. Together we are making a difference.
