Big Family of Michigan Gives and Receives

Big Family of Michigan is a nonprofit organization that has been serving the needs of Michigan’s foster and at risk children and young adults since 2000.  The organization relies on the generosity of others to execute their many programs that support these children.

During the month of July, Big Family welcomed the generous support of neighboring Macomb County businesses – Walgreens, Rams Horn and fiVE BELoW – in securing new school supplies for their Education Supply Program.  Walgreens and Ram’s Horn hosted a week long supply drive and fiVE BELoW donated partial proceeds from one weekends’ sales to replenish Big Family’s school supplies.

Foster children and young aged out foster youth may pick up necessary school supplies prior to beginning the school year and then may request additional supplies throughout the year.  The goal is to keep them supplied with the tools they need to succeed. Over 2,900 children received supplies for the 2012 school year.

Also in July, Big Family ensured that foster children and their support families were given the opportunity to attend a three day family camp, hosted by Families on the Move, by making a $5,000 donation to the hosting organization.  Families on the Move is a Detroit-based nonprofit agency that provides support to members of the foster, adoptive and biological parent community – an important service creating positive relationships within the families.  Families on the Moves’ three day camp has been an significant educational and emotional tool for strengthening family bonds for the last 14 years.

Monetary and school supply donations are always needed and welcomed to keep Big Family of Michigan programs going strong. To find out more about Big Family of Michigan and its programs, visit www.bigfamilyofmichigan.org.
