Business & Tech

Family-Owned 'Business of the Year,' JEM Tech, Moves to Clinton Twp.

JEM Tech Group was awarded the U.S. Small Business Administration's Michigan Jeffrey Butland Family-Owned Business of the Year Award in April.

For JEM Tech Group President Jami M. Moore, no diamond is more precious than the one sketched into the logo of her family’s company.

Designed by her father and JEM founder James Edward Miller, that diamond now represents more than 25 years of success for this second-generation company. Moore’s sisters, Kelly Nutting and Denise Bonino, are also JEM employees.

“Fourteen years ago my dad was going to sell the business and retire,” said Moore. “I was in pharmaceutical sales then and was going to stay in corporate America, but knowing that the JEM logo was going to go away ... I stepped up to the plate. That diamond is never going to leave.”

Specializing in information technology since 1979, JEM Tech, formerly known as JEM Computers, offers end-to-end solutions for companies looking to make their data centers more energy efficient.

“What we’re doing now, versus what we were doing 30 years ago, is helping customers with a data center take a look at what they’re doing in their data center and helping them become more energy efficient,” Moore said. “We’re focused on the infrastructure – the power and the cooling.”

Not to be confused with a help desk or call center, a data center is the room or facility companies use to house their computer systems, which include components such as servers, backup power supplies and telecommunications.

“The data center holds all the computing power and is probably 40 percent of a company’s electrical bill,” Moore said. “We look at where (a customer) is today and where they want to go tomorrow and put in solutions that will save on long-term energy use.”

By serving a range of industries and keeping their focus on each customer’s individual needs, Moore said the company was able survive the recession and continue to grow.

“I feel we did fine in the economy because we weren’t 100 percent focused on automotive. In Michigan, we have to get used to looking at different industries besides automotive. We didn’t bank our dollar on automotive and I can tell you that is probably why we’re around.”

Needing more office space, the company moved Clinton Township in June, renting a row of offices with plenty of room to grow, as Moore said she hopes to double the size of JEM Tech in the next five years, including her 12-person workforce.

In April, JEM Tech was awarded the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Michigan Jeffrey Butland Family-Owned Business of the Year Award. This award is bestowed on family-owned and operated small businesses with at least a 15-year track record, which has been passed from one generation to another.

JEM Tech is located at 23537 Lakepointe Dr., off Gratiot, in Clinton Township.
