Cheli's Chili Bar Closes in Clinton Township

The Hayes Road restaurant closed its doors Feb. 23. First State Bank has already purchased the property.

Cheli’s Chili Bar in Clinton Township aired its last Red Wings game Saturday.

A franchise of former Detroit Red Wings star Chris Chelios' sports bar of the same name, Cheli's Chili closed its Hayes Road location on Feb. 23 after five years in business.

"From all of us at Chelis we have appreciated the opportunity to serve you," read a post on the restaurant's Facebook page. "Effective Saturday, February 23 at close was our final day of operation."

“Basically, it’s due to a lack of sales,” owner Joe Vicari told The Macomb Daily

Opening in 2008, the Hayes Road location was operated by the Andiamo Restaurant Group, headed by Vicari, under a licensing agreement with Chelios, who opened the original Detroit restaurant and later the Dearborn location that also closed its doors last week.

The building at 41240 Hayes, which has also been home to a Buddy's Pizza and Post Bar in recent years, was sold to First State Bank.

The Clinton Township board of trustees is scheduled to review the bank's proposed plans for the property Monday night.
