Vintage Baseball Games Take Festival of the Senses Crowds Back in Time

The Mount Clemens Regulars will play the Wyandotte Stars and Greenfield Village Lah De Dahs this weekend at the Festival of the Senses in Clinton Township.

It may be 2012 for the spectators, but for the men who play in the Mount Clemens Regulars vintage baseball club, it's at least 1867.

Visitors to this year's Clinton Township Festival of the Senses can travel back in time with the Regulars as they don the uniforms of yesteryear and demonstrate how the "gentlemen's game" was once played in America.

"A lot of other teams and organizations try to put it off as a romance novel, make-believe, but the reality is it’s history," said Stephen Lunau, a Clinton Township resident and club member. "Our club in particular takes it very deeply. They’re trying to portray history."

Lunau and his son Jason are two of the newest members of the club, having joined only six weeks ago.

"It’s a gentlemen's game, and I like that about it," Lunau said. "I've had enough of competitive baseball. Now it's time to relax and enjoy it more."

Spectators can enjoy the game with Lunau and his fellow club members this weekend in the Historic Village on the grounds of the Civic Center. The club is scheduled to play the Wyandotte Stars on Saturday and the Greenfield Village Lah De Dahs on Sunday. Both games are at 1 p.m.

The 2012 Festival of the Senses takes place Sept. 22-23 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the grounds of the Clinton Township Civic Center. It will feature more than 100 artists and entertainers, food, a dog parade and more.

Free parking will be located at the Civic Center, Chippewa Valley High School and Erie Elementary. A free shuttle will bring guests to the Art Festival. Handicap parking will also be available at the Civic Center. Admission is free.

Have you ever watched a vintage baseball game? What did you notice most?

We are a part of the Regulars family this year. My children have enjoyed learning about the origins of the game and how the rules have changed over the many years. It's also fun family time at the games.
