MCC, UAW-Ford Join Martin Luther King Day Volunteer Efforts for Macomb Habitat

With volunteers from Macomb Community College and UAW-Ford, Macomb County Habitat for Humanity expects to add more than 60 pairs of hands to its building efforts this month in the spirit of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Student volunteers from MCC will partner with Macomb County Habitat for Humanity for their third Martin Luther King Day, while UAW-Ford will kick-off its role as the first corporate partner to begin working on a Macomb Habitat project in 2013.

Where the students will split their efforts Jan. 19 between deconstruction efforts in Eastpointe and Centerline, UAW-Ford volunteers will focus their work Jan. 16 on a home in Clinton Township.

The UAW-Ford home, located at 19415 Nicke, is scheduled for completion by Feb. 1. The home's future owner, a mother of four, is currently a partner family with Macomb Habitat and is in the process of completing the 250 sweat equity hours required to qualify for her zero percent interest mortgage.

Macomb Habitat looks for partners each year to celebrate the spirit of Martin Luther King Day, which it summarizes in a quote from the Civil Rights leader himself, "The ultimate measures of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and conveniences, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy." 

The UAW-Ford has pledged to provide a minimum of five volunteers, three days every week during 2013.
