Macomb County Sheriff Encourages Public to Take Pledge Not to Text and Drive

Texting can wait. 

That's what four national wireless service providers and Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham want to drive home to the public during an event at 10:30 a.m. Thursday inside the K building at Macomb Community College's South Campus in Warren. 

As part of the "It Can Wait" campaign, Wickersham will encourage students, staff and the general public to take a pledge not to text and drive on the Drive 4 Pledges Day. 

AT&T workers will demonstrate the hazards of texting and driving by allowing students to test out a wheel-and-pedal kit while using a web-based driving simulator. 

"Texting while driving is involved in more than 100,000 vehicle crashes each year across our country, often causing injuries and deaths," Wickersham said in a prepared statement.  

"There not a single message worth taking such a risk for yourself, the people in your car and the other drivers on the road, and that is why this drive to stop texting and driving to so very important," he said.

Individuals who take the pledge join Sprint, T-Mobile US, Inc., Verizon and more than 200 other organizations by sharing their commitment not to text and drive, according to campaign.
